PHARMACOGENETICS

Empowering personalized medicine with PGx.

Pharmacogenetics (PGx) is the science of how a person’s individual genetics affects their response to certain medications, both in terms of therapeutic effect, as well as adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

Biovision Diagnostics’ comprehensive PGx testing analyzes a patient’s genes that code for specific proteins that are involved in drug response, such as drug receptors and drug-metabolizing enzymes.  By understanding how a person is predisposed to responding to a particular drug, or combination of drugs, the clinician can choose medications that are best for that specific patient (aka, personalized medicine).  As a result, healthcare providers can avoid “trial-and-error” dosing, substantially reduce the risk of adverse drug reactions, and select the best therapeutic strategy, which leads to reduced treatment costs for both the patient and the provider.

BENEFITS OF PHARMACOGENETICS TESTING

IDENTIFIES WHICH DRUG MAY BE MOST EFFECTIVE BEFORE TREATMENT STARTS

Helps clinicians choose the most effective drug for each patient, minimize the risk of adverse reactions, and reduce hospitalizations and treatment costs.

REDUCES THE RISK OF ADVERSE EVENTS RELATED TO CERTAIN DRUGS

Assess a patient’s risk for adverse drug reactions before they take the medication, which improves patient safety and minimizes costs for healthcare facilities.

ALLOWS CLINICIANS TO OPTIMIZE THE DOSE OF CURRENT MEDICATIONS

Helps clinicians predict the appropriate dose of medication for their patients, allowing them to create more personalized medication plans to maximize efficacy and reduce pharmacy costs.

LEADS TO IMPROVED PATIENT TREATMENTS AND OUTCOMES

Test results become part of a patient’s medical record, allowing physicians to make more informed decisions when prescribing medications for future medical issues.
